The Volunteer Involvers Network

What is the VIN?

The Volunteer Involvers Network is a meeting hosted by Volunteer Centre Lambeth to give Volunteer Involving Organisations across the borough the chance to network, share information, listen to key note speakers and share practices. This meeting is held in a number of formatts, we hold panel discussion, group workshops, have key note speakers on relevant topics. The meeting is usually half day and in the past has been held at a number of sites across the community such as the Karibu Educational Centre in Brixton, Waterloo Action Centre and Stockwell Community Resource Centre.

December 2012

In December we held the final VIN of the year and as such, used the meeting as a chance to look back over volunteering throughout 2012. As well as this we began looking forward to 2013. This was important for the network to not only reflect, but also to be prepared as the next VIN in the Spring of 2013, will be the last!

  • We held workshops and explored the following topics:
  • Is there really an Olympic Legacy?
  • Have the recent changes to the CRB/DBS checks affected the way organisations will think about volunteer recruitment?
  • Have changing political agendas affected volunteering?
  • What are the main challenges to volunteering?
  • What recommendations can people give towards the future of the Volunteer Involvers Network?

The feedback from the groups was really interesting and stirred a few healthy debates amongst the delegates, such as some groups did see an increase in interest from volunteers during the olympics, but with some arguing this did not signify a legacy as such!

If you could not attend the event but would like to know more about the discussion groups, please contact Adrienne at the Volunteer Centre.

During the meeting we also had a hugely informative presentation from Jenni Alexander of the Aurora Project. This presentation informed delegates of how they can best support volunteers that have a history of alcohol and substance abuse. Currently in Lambeth there are 2,074 cases of residents needing treatment for alcohol and/or substance abuse, 5.6% of Lambeths residents are recorded 'harmful drinkers' and there are between 10,000-15,000 Lambeth residents who are dependant drinkers. Because of these shockingly high statistics, it is vital that organisations in the borough are well prepared for how to manage and support volunteers with this particular background. Thank you Jenni for such a useful presentation. Again, if anyone would like to know more, or would like a copy of the presentation, please contact Adrienne.

And finally, the next VIN will be in March 2013 and will be the last!!! Keep your eyes out for the invitation which will be sent out very soon. Hope to see you then!
