About Us

History of Volunteer Centre Lambeth

In April 2006, we held an event called Developing the Blueprint where we asked the voluntary and community sector (VCS) in Lambeth what their priorities were for developing a Volunteer Centre for the sector and you told us they were:

  • A centrally located accessible premises/resource
  • Trained, supportive and knowledgeable staff
  • Inclusive approach – encouraging innovation
  • Good practice support and training
  • Information and support hub/resource
  • Support for and outreach work to disadvantaged and hidden groups

Since that time, those priorities have formed the basis of our Business Plan and Strategic Priorities and we have taken great strides in working towards achieving these goals.  The first priority was to secure premises to operate from and we have now achieved that goal, along with others on the list.  The building is centrally located in Brixton Market close to the tube and train stations as well as many other transport links.  The building has accessible toilets on both the first and ground floors and a lift to ensure wheelchair users are able to navigate throughout the building.

The premises allows us to provide a greater service to both VCS groups and individuals who want to volunteer in Lambeth by having desk spaces for volunteers to assist with the running of the Volunteer Centre. The Volunteer Centre is currently supported by a fantastic team of 15-20 volunteers on a rotational basis. The building also allows us to deliver a programme of training and support sessions for both volunteers and their managers as well as offering volunteers confidential 1-2-1 support sessions in our small interview room through our drop-in centre service.

We are also able to rent out our training room which seats 12 – 15 people, at a competitive rate.

LVAC would like to thank the London Borough of Lambeth Council for helping us to identify a suitable space and for agreeing a reasonable rent and terms of a lease on the building.  LVAC would also like to extend their thanks to the Local Strategic Partnership; Lambeth First who have funded the redevelopment of the building through the Government’s Working Neighbourhoods Fund (WNF).
